Nobody is Evil: Creating Sympathetic Villains
Matthew Phillion + Jam Blute • Band Room • 3:00-4:00
The best part of every story is the bad guy, right? Loki or Voldemort, Darth Vader or the Borg, a memorable adversary makes every hero, and every story, even better. But villains need to be more than just the “black hat.” They need to be just as real, just as well-crafted, and just as engaging as your protagonists. And absolute evil is rarely the best choice. So how do you create sympathy for the devil? By developing fully-realized, complex, villains whose motives are meaningful and who your audience might find themselves rooting for, even just a little bit. Find out from two veteran writers some tips and tricks to developing a better bad guy.
Magic and Sci-Fi: Making and Breaking Your Own Rules
Matthew Phillion + Jam Blute • Band Room • 4:30-5:30
How does magic work in Harry Potter? What about in the Supernatural world? What about space travel? Does hard science rule the day in your favorite fictional world, or do starship engines roar as they jet through the darkness? Rules are necessary for believability and to help the author maintain control over the story, but they can also bog an author—and their audience—in excessive detail. In this session, we’ll talk about how to get started building the rulebook for your fictional world, and how not to get lost when you start.

Samantha Paul • Panel Room 2 • 4:30-5:30

Well, it’s time to dig in and find out as we discuss the history behind and around the many tropes found in anime.
